Fine for illegal disposal

$250 to $1,000 for the first conviction for dumping any items illegally. Fines increase for subsequent convictions, illegal disposal by a business, or quantities in excess of one cubic yard.

The penalty also can include a requirement that the person convicted of dumping must remove the dumped materials, or pay to have them removed.

Fines for illegally dumping tires are significantly higher than fines for illegally discarding other materials. They may range from $500 to $10,000 per day per violation.

Building Materials or Construction and Demolition Material

Cost of legal disposal: Free drop-off for most materials separated for recycling.

Sample options for legal disposal:

Construction and demolition material – including cardboard, recyclable wood, scrap metal and yard debris – are banned from landfill disposal. Recycling for these items is provided at all Refuse Disposal Sites.

Mixed construction and demolition material drop-off options: Some companies accept mixed loads of construction and demolition debris, including asphalt, cardboard, carpet padding, ceramic toilets, concrete, lumber end-cuts, scrap metal, sheetrock and yard debris. Materials are sorted and recycled for you.

Cost of legal disposal: Free drop-off at most locations.

Examples include:

  • Consumer electronics
    (tape players, VCRs, stereo equipment, radios, PDAs, cell phones, etc.)

Electronic devices are banned from landfill disposal. Electronics recycling is provided at all County Refuse Disposal Sites.

Curbside recycling for small household electronic devices:
Small household electronic devices not larger than 2 feet in any dimension can be recycled in the blue single-stream recycling cart in Cloverdale, Cotati, Healdsburg, Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Sebastopol and the unincorporated area. Do not put any items with a screen or monitor in the blue single-stream recycling cart.

Tires

Fines for illegally dumping tires are significantly higher than fines for illegally discarding other materials. They may range from $500 to $10,000 per day per violation.

Cost of legal disposal:

$5 each. Passenger tires (16” wheel size or less)
$10 each. Truck tires (17” to 24” wheel size) *

Sample options for legal disposal:

Tires are banned from landfill disposal and cannot be discarded in curbside garbage collection.

All Refuse Disposal Sites accept tires for a fee. Transport up to nine used or waste tires at one time.

Transporting more than nine tires requires a special registration permit, which can be requested by calling Sonoma County Environmental Health at (707) 565-6565.

You can also contract with a permitted waste tire hauler.
